Judy 22nd was a day that we’ll remember spending with two loving families about to become one. For the Matthiessen and Flondra families it was a day that they will never, ever forget.
The weather was a balmy 25 degrees in the country, where Karen and Brett got ready for their wedding day. Surrounded by their closest friends and family, they exchanged vows on the land where they had made a home together. As the day went on we photographed their guests enjoying the company of others, taking in the rustic, western and handmade decor, and celebrating the happy couple. We first met Brett and Karen last August way down in Heisler while we shot their engagement photos and got to know their love story. It’s always amazing being a part of the wedding day and seeing it all come full circle. And with these two we could tell that for them, sealing the deal wasn’t the start of something special…it was a continuation of an already blissful life they made together.
Right down to the evening dances, every moment was jam packed with emotion and special surprises. It’s rare for us to see something new done at receptions after all these years but Karen pulled out all the stops and we got to experience a few! Firstly, it was held at Stry Hall, which we hadn’t been before and LOVED! Then there was popcorn as a favour, a really neat wedding anniversary dance, another wedding song dance, and icing on the cake was Karen performing a song she learned to sing and play on guitar to her dad and new husband.
In some ways for Davin and I this wedding day was very much similar to the dozens of others we’ve shot, but of course, every wedding is unique in its own special way. We always walk away either having learned something new, making new and lifelong friends, or even perhaps wiser and more in love with each other or our job than we were the day before. The Matthiessen wedding was full of love and high on happiness. While culling the photos, the two of us sat together as we always do and talked about our favourite shots of the day, how our mornings differed from each other – myself with the ladies and Davin with the gents – and the people we met that really stuck out to us.
Less than two weeks after the wedding, we learned that two of those very people we spoke of having been so outgoing and a joy to work with, had passed away incredibly unexpectedly. We were shocked and heartbroken for the families we got to know so well. Like we said, Karen and Brett’s wedding day will obviously be a day that everyone remembers as the outstanding celebration of their love and commitment that it was. But it is also such an important reminder to hold those we love so very close to us. So get in the picture. Don’t avoid our lens because you’re camera shy or think you don’t photograph well. We are there to help make all of those memories last a lifetime and you just plain never know how much significance having your face in those photos could mean one day.
Thank you Karen and Brett for including us in your big day! We wish you both nothing but a lifetime of health and happiness!
